Bikram choudhury's photo in postureBikram Choudhury began learning hatha yoga in his native India at the age of 3. At 5, he began studying with Bishnu Ghosh, one of the supreme physical culturalists of our time and brother of Paramahansa Yogananda. Bikram quickly became a hatha yoga champion and at age 11, he was the youngest contestant ever to win the National India Yoga Competition. At 14, Swami Shivananda declared him "Yogi Raj" (King of the Yogis). At age 17, a weight-lifting accident crippled Bikram. With the Ghosh’s guidance and a strict regimen of yoga, Bikram defied doctors prognoses that he would never walk again and completely healed his knee. In a United Nations sponsored research project at Tokyo University, Bikram helped doctors prove that yoga regenerates tissues and relieves symptoms of chronic ailments. Bikram then tailored his technique for the Western person. Combining Eastern discipline and Western medicine, Bikram perfected his comprehensive, twenty-six posture system making it suitable for everyone. As an exact technique and series, Bikram’s Yoga brings health and peace to practitioners of all ages and fitness levels.
